The time is 1982. The forces of the underworld have dented the reputation of the law keepers, as it is easier and profitable to cooperate with them allowing them to run their smuggling operations than face their ire in countering them. Vijay Kapoor (Bobby Deol) is an upright police officer amid a handful of those who still wage a battle against these gangs that rule the underbelly of Mumbai. He leads a covert operation against the mafia of don Umar Kalsekar on the high sea, but fails to nab him in the end, exposing a massive nexus between the underworld and politicians. Distraught about his failure, the untimely loss of his wife and disillusioned with the system, Kapoor confronts Manohar Patkar (Anup Soni) a minister who knew about the offensive, only to be transferred to the police training academy.

Here he meets 5 young cadets who are in total awe about his reputation and trains them to encounter the dreaded criminals, building the Class of 83. The film is about how these five are influenced by Dean Vijay Kapoor and lead a squad to wipe out the smuggling mafia from creating further rot to Mumbai Police and the political system. It's not as easy as it sounds, as the Class of 83 faces dilemmas, internal competition, temptation and conflict before returning to their core objective in avenging the Dean's humiliation and personal agenda.

Class of 83 is a taut thriller that doesn't waste any time, going about the narrative at a sultry pace. There are no side stories and distributaries, director Atul Sabharwal sticks to the agenda of the revenge saga. But the movie is a nostalgic reminder of the numerous Bollywood potboilers from the 1980's that pitted police against the powerful underworld gangs and doesn't offer any newness to the content. It's your average cat and mouse game albeit without the legendary music videos and stereotypical caricatures, keeping to the point. Bobby Deol is downright impressive as the introverted, brooding yet sensitive senior police officer who has ridden the crests and troughs of a tumultuous career. Joy Sengupta, Vishwajeet Pradhan and Anup Soni are measured, sans melodrama, adding credibility to the story. The five protagonists of the Class of 83, Bhupendra Jadawat, Abhishek Bhalerao, Sameer Paranjape, Hitesh Bhojraj and Prithvik Pratap are honest in their performance, spewing volatility and impatience.
